With many thanks to Mary Coghlan for the words that follow.

This page is to recognize those special Spartans who have passed on before us but haven't left our hearts.

Gary Montuoro
Gary Francis Montuoro

May 5, 1990

Laughter....that's what comes to a lot of our minds when we hear the name Gary Montuoro. Gary was determined to find his place in this life, but not without a great deal of fun, joking and laughter to guide him. A tragic car accident quickly took Gary from us at a very early age.

Gary was a social, vibrant person.  He was always concerned about the well being of those he loved, and would be by their sides in a moments notice. He adored his immediate and extended families, and had a deep sense of loyalty to his friends. To many of us, shock was the reaction at the time of his death, for he had an incredible spirit, filled with a passion for life, that so unexplainably was stolen from us. Again, explanations and rationalizations were not within our reach.

Amazingly, as his towering teammate, John, who was called to another life before he was, Gary lived to win on that basketball court. Life and it's twists and turns took a back seat at game time, as he was incredibly focused on being a winning part of that team. He embraced the competitiveness of the sport as deeply as he embraced those he loved. Gary was real, he called the shots in life just as he did those on the court...as he saw them and exactly as he wanted them to be.

To all of us who knew him, he was another one of God's gifts. His smile and warmth will remain with us. Gary, we should all have your spirit for making life work. We love you, we miss you and hold you in our hearts. May God hold you in the palm of His hand forever and for always.

John was an incredible gift to all of us who knew him. He was dynamic, full of life, fun, caring and real. Life threw him a turn neither he, his family or friends were ready for. Lymphatic Leukemia filled his system, but never, ever his spirit. He was full of "life" until the very end. John was as much, if not more a part of our class than we were....he was determined on those
basketball courts to be the best, most competitive player he could be. John made school "work" for him. He excelled in his studies, yet was relaxed, curious and yes, devious. John's expertise was toliet papering, particularly  after he and his "accomplises" armed with empty suitcases cleaned out Miami International Airports supply of paper!  He lived for fun and loved to live. John had a deep sense of family and an incredible bond with his friends.

John's size, height, stamina and smile will forever be a part of his image. His battle with his disease brought forth confusion and questions to many of us, particularly those of us who felt the "battle" with him. To this day, explanations and rationalizations seem hard to achieve, however, he taught us many things...to laugh, to live and to struggle.  Most importantly he was an exemplary figure that life and love go hand in hand. John, you will forever remain in our hearts..thank you for the gift of you. We miss you and we love you. May God's love shine on you for eternity.
